Rats are one of the easiest animals to sex.
Male rats, from a young age, have very noticeable 'testicles'.
All these pictures show males on the left and females on the right.

FOUR DAYS OLD

Sexing rats is very important, especially with orphaned rats.
Rats should be sexed young - 4.5weeks is a good age.
If you have a young litter it is recommended that you separate the boys and girls at 5 weeks,
especially if you are unsure of when they were born, as rats can mate from as young as 6 weeks old.
Make sure when buying from a pet shop, or anywhere else, you always sex them as soon as possible.
Just remember pet shops are often wrong and even breeders/rescues, can make mistakes.
